Understanding Conditional Life Expectancy

Conditional life expectancy tells you how long you can expect to live given that you've already reached your current age. This is different from life expectancy at birth, which averages in early deaths.

For retirement planning, conditional life expectancy is more relevant because it accounts for the fact that you've already survived to your current age.

Mortality Factor

The mortality factor adjusts your baseline mortality risk. A factor of 1.0 means average population mortality. Less than 1.0 indicates better-than-average health (longer expected lifespan), while greater than 1.0 indicates higher mortality risk.

Mortality Improvement

The improvement rate accounts for medical advances that reduce mortality rates over time. A 1% annual improvement means each year's mortality rate is 1% lower than the previous year's.
